For the 6th pick of the 2020 Nfl Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers chose Oregon QB Justin Herbert. This was both a very predicted and surprise pick by the Chargers but apparently they have decided they need a QB for the future. Hebert comes with both praise and questions in his abilities. So we will have to see how he takes to being “coached up” in the pros. Every played out of college needs to be developed in order to be at the top of the pro level but not all talented players in college can make the transition. It takes both physical skills AND mental toughness.
The Chargers surprise move was to trade up to the 23rd pick via a trade with the New England Patriots. In a bold move to jump up the Chargers selected Oklahoma ILB Kenneth Murray. Murray is an instinctive second level defender that is a sleek, long armed strong player with good instincts that can fly from sideline to sideline. He is the exact type of player that is needed to complete in the new AFC West, which is definitely going with offense minded game schemes.
Though many were skeptical about Herbert, and for good reason, the Chargers definitely have a potential future QB with a lot of physical talent and, with good coaching, could grow into a top NFL QB. Murray is a lot closer to being a top tier defender in the NFL but I always put in the factor on whether any college player, regardless of talent and experience, can make the jump to the NFL where EVERYONE is fast and EVERYONE is good. The worst player in the NFL is equal to the most of the best players in college.
